I spent a month with a group of folx i didn’t yet know, untangling the history of the Black experience in America and our dissonant hand in oppression on a global scale.

We honored the particular becoming of Liberia, a relationship that goes un-noted in our history books. We met every nuance with tenderness. We began weaving a tether to Liberian people that only comes with historical context and deep care. We opened a portal.

This piece reverberates a few of the themes we explored, from Nat Turner & Co's rebellion, to Baltimore's resistance to Maryland's Colonization Society, to the Du Bois x Garvey debates, to the exploitation of Liberia's natural resources, and the power of archiving as a tool for collecting & uncovering ancestral memory.

Thank you to the powerful guides through this experience, Bilphena (IG @liberianjue_ ), Sho-Shana (IG @sheeggo ), and guest facilitators Savannah Wood (IG @savannahinpublic) & Solomon Adé (IG @_solomonade). New Generation Scholars is an essential beacon in Baltimore.
